Council Tax Calculator

Estimate your annual Council Tax bill from your valuation band and your council's Band D charge.

⚠️ This is an estimate, not a bill. It uses the standard national valuation-band ratios applied to the Band D figure you enter — it can't account for local premiums, empty-property surcharges, or exemptions specific to your council. Always cross-check the result against your actual Council Tax bill or your local authority's website before relying on it for any decision.

How the Council Tax calculator works

Select your property's Council Tax band (A-H, shown on your bill) and enter your local council's Band D annual charge — every council sets its own Band D figure and publishes it each April. The calculator applies the standard national ratio for your band to that figure, then subtracts any discounts, to estimate your annual charge and monthly instalments.

Because Band D charges vary widely between the roughly 300 billing authorities in England, this tool can't look one up for you automatically — you'll need to find it on your council's website or your own bill for an accurate estimate.

Council Tax band ratios

6/9Band A
7/9Band B
8/9Band C
9/9Band D
11/9Band E
13/9Band F
15/9Band G
18/9Band H

These ratios are fixed nationally and applied to whatever Band D charge your own council sets — they don't change from council to council, only the Band D figure itself does.

Frequently asked questions

How is Council Tax calculated?

Every property is placed in one of eight valuation bands (A-H) based on its 1991 value. Each council sets an annual Band D charge, and every other band pays a fixed proportion of it — Band A pays 6/9, Band H pays 18/9 (double).

Where do I find my council's Band D charge?

It's published on your council's website each year and appears on your Council Tax bill. It varies significantly between local authorities, which is why this calculator asks you to enter it.

What is the single-person discount?

If you're the only adult living in a property, you get a 25% discount. Other discounts and exemptions exist for students, severely mentally impaired residents, and empty properties, which you can approximate with the "other discount" field.

Is this an official council tax bill?

No. It's an estimate based on standard national ratios and the Band D figure you enter — it isn't connected to any council's billing system. Always check your actual bill or your council's website for the exact amount you owe.
